The right desert-safari outfit is comfortable, secure and adaptable. You do not need specialised expedition clothing, but loose footwear, heavy fabrics or an outfit that restricts movement can make simple activities awkward. Use this practical list to prepare for the dunes and camp without overpacking.
Choose light, comfortable layers
Breathable trousers, long shorts or a comfortable long skirt can work well depending on your activities and personal preference. Pair them with a light top that lets you move easily when entering a 4×4, sitting at camp or trying sandboarding. Very loose fabric can catch during active experiences, so balance airflow with practicality.
Evenings from late autumn through winter can cool quickly. A light cardigan, overshirt or thin jacket is usually easier to carry than a heavy coat. In warmer months, focus on breathable materials and sun coverage.
Footwear matters
Closed trainers or secure sandals with straps are generally more practical than flip-flops. Sand will enter almost any shoe, but secure footwear helps when walking on uneven ground, mounting a camel or taking part in an ATV or buggy activity. High heels and delicate shoes are poor choices.
Powered riding activities should be approached with closed footwear. Follow any additional clothing rules provided by the operator and do not assume fashion footwear is acceptable safety equipment.
Sun and sand protection
Bring sunglasses with good coverage, sunscreen and a hat that will stay secure. A light scarf can be useful for sun, wind or dust, but it is optional. Contact-lens wearers may prefer glasses if windblown sand causes irritation.
Keep important items in a zipped bag rather than an open tote. Fine sand reaches phone ports, camera mechanisms and loose pockets surprisingly easily.
Respectful clothing
Dubai is international and desert camps welcome visitors from many backgrounds, but respectful clothing remains a sensible choice. If your day also includes a mosque or cultural venue, that location may impose stricter coverage requirements than the safari itself. Plan for the most conservative stop on your itinerary.
Avoid clothing with offensive slogans or imagery. Swimwear is not appropriate for a standard desert camp programme.
What children should wear
Children need secure footwear, sun protection and a layer for cooler evenings. Pack a simple change of clothes for younger children because sand, food and camp activities can be messy. Do not dress a child in thick layers during hot conditions simply for photographs.
Provide the correct child age when booking and request a child seat in advance. Clothing does not replace the need for the appropriate confirmed restraint.
Small packing list
Carry water if you prefer having your own supply, essential medication, sunscreen, sunglasses, a secure phone pouch and a light layer. Leave valuable jewellery and unnecessary electronics at the hotel.
For overnight packages, also ask about the sleeping arrangement and bring basic toiletries, warmer nightwear and any personal item you require for comfortable rest.
